Demand

Edinburgh is considered one of the most prestigious and desirable student destinations in Europe. The city is home to four main universities including Edinburgh Napier University, Heriot Watt University, Queen Margaret University and the renowned Russell Group University of Edinburgh.In 2022, there were a total of 64,255 students enrolled in higher education in Edinburgh, with the University of Edinburgh hosting the highest number of international students from non-UK countries at 18,050. Between 2013 and 2021, UK student numbers increased by 24.6% in Edinburgh, equating to 7,820 more students.
The number of international students attending Edinburgh universities has grown by 29% over the last four years and now stands at 22,175. This equates to 36% of the full-time student population. Edinburgh also has one of the largest post-graduate populations in the UK, with 29% of all students being post-graduates in 2022.

The total number of full-time students attending Edinburgh’s universities increased by 6.0% in 2022 to 64,255, following a rise of 6.5% in the previous year. It is important to note that this growth was recorded during a ‘Covid’ year. The University of Edinburgh saw the largest rise of 6.7% year on year – an increase of 2,270 students. Whilst all of Edinburgh’s universities reported strong growth over a longer term, The University of Edinburgh in isolation recorded the largest rise of 45.2%, totalling a further 11,265 students since 2013.
